The very

which perhaps has been the parent of the whole Italian cuisine
which has spread around the entire world today !
The people
of Sicily are warm, kind and passionate about their culture and
their food. If you try a few words in Italian or express delight
at the cooking, do not be surprised to be invited home and to
be 'Guest of Honour' at a family feast where they will
enjoy watching you enjoy the bounty on offer !
Sicily is one of the largest wine producing regions in Italy.
Sicilian wines are known for their strength of character, high
alcoholic content and sweetness. Lots of occasions are the very
good reason for a banquet and it is a privilege for a guest to
be included !
Imagine
a jasmine scented verandah surrounded by lemon and olive trees.
You are sipping some chilled peach or lemon tea. A flurry
of activity and the cold beers or wines will appear with the appetizers:
Batter fried artichokes, Aubergines whizzed into a Caponata, with
olives, tomatoes, capers and onions, Perhaps some fried cauliflower
or roasted sweet peppers, accompanied by Panelle, little chick-pea
flour loaves and this is just to start !
You may
be offered Arancine, rice patties filled with cheese or peas and
ragout sauce. Delicious to bite into, but be sure to have a napkin
! Having mastered this, go for the Spaghetti Alla Norma
with tomato and aubergine sauce. Expect to be shown how
to fork up this wonderful pasta efficiently !!
 
Perhaps
this will be followed by pork or chicken or spit-roast or maybe
grilled sardines or baked swordfish or tuna. Maybe there will
be some local cheeses too. If there is room left and, believe
me, your hosts will INSIST that there is room ! you could go on
to enjoy beautiful desserts; Sicilian Casata, Almond biscuits,
Ricotta filled pastries with honey and large pieces of water melon.
It is little
wonder that after the Limoncello and strong Espresso coffee, you
will want to join your hosts in strolling and perhaps pausing
to enjoy a Lemon Granita ( a sort of coarse lemon sorbet ) ! At
one in the morning you will pass families strolling with their
youngsters, and babies in prams. How can you sleep on a hot August
night? Music may fill the air, and the sounds of conversation
and laughter. A truly magical and special Sicilian holiday experience
